Hi Fonzie, Previous responders you’ve already acknowledged (Nicky, Melissa, artifacts & Jimmy) have made good calls on this question; for me, the over-reliance on these songs cheapens the reason we love those songs in the first place, as well as the artists’ legacies. To my way of thinking (admittedly a bit more philosophical, perhaps, than the average targeted consumer), this excessive use reflects poorly on the Marketing Dept’s of the manufacturers and is an utter indictment of the creative vacuum that apparently exists at the Ad agencies which concoct the commercials. One could say that the first time a song was used, then that was a one-off ‘clever idea’, and as long as it was used with permission from the artists & songwriter(s), it would be acceptable. Inevitably, though, our copycat modern world pounced on the concept and music fans are regularly driven up the wall. But I don’t know how it will ever stop. Maybe the young music fans of today are already accustomed to it, and might not be bothered 20 or 30 years from now when their old favorites get appropriated for irritating commercial use.
