A THUMB TIP! It is used,as you say, to hide small items. You can in fact, get quite large items in there. For instance, the Chinese make excellent silk – very fine and often used by magicians. This stuff can fit into a very small space, so quite a large piece can fit into a thumb tip. In use, the audience should only be allowed to see the thumb ‘end on’ as it will often be noticed if they can see it ‘side on’. Also the magician should always keep the hand with a thumb tip moving. This too makes it more difficult to spot.
