It doesn’t matter the dollar value of an item. What matters is the unwillingness to be honest and pay for the item. Stealing is an act that is thought through and done for several different reasons. peer pressure, adrenaline rush, habit, etc. But no matter, it is a bad judgment to think that no matter the item.. big or small is worth having on your permanent record. It can and does screw up potential jobs having a shoplifting charge on your record. You have to acknowledge this on job applications. If they check and you have lied, you will be fired immediately.

Of course they can! They can take you to court for stealing period. The cost of the item is irrelevant.

You can be arrest and taken to court for stealing anything no matter what the cost is.

Yes, they arrest shoplifters all the time. Under a certain amount is not a bar to prosecution
