I received a letter…??
Soooo, I thought this was a prank or a scam at first, and now that I’ve looked it up I feel awful because (even though I don’t have really any money), I would love to go. Isn’t there anything I can do to fix this? It seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel to Europe and actually have fun… And I feel like I’ve ruined my chance to go, even though I might not have been able to anyhow. Is there any way I can fix this?

However, what it DEFINITELY is is a waste of your money if you have any real interested in being an exchange student. It’s a tourist thing. You’d have fun, but not really accomplish a lot.
If you have a true interest in becoming an exchange student, talk to your high school counselor. The best time to go is your junior year. You will have the benefits of language and culture immersion and colleges and universities LOVE exchange students! Many offered preferred admissions and sometimes even scholarship money.

That is a site written by former exchange students for exchange students!
Good luck!
