To improve your reading skills, try keeping a diary and using the PSQ5R method (find a purpose, skimming through the text before hand, set questions and find answers and read selectively, recite, record, reflect and review) see

For me, for subjects like History and biology, I try to make a mental movie of what i read. I try to twist it so that it becomes funny and i visualise it with vibrant colours. This makes the subject more interesting and easier to remember. It takes a rerun of about 5 times like, once you read it, 10 mins after you read it, a day after, a week after then a month after for it to stick. I also find that if you teach someone else, it tends to stick better too.
