There is no such place as, “can’t learn anything.”

Be Humble.

Realize how much there is to learn, how little time.

I set aside a specific time that I intend to study that subject. I write down the time and the minimum length of time that I need to study. I make sure I put a reminder where I can see it. When the time comes to study, I put on some relaxing music, find a spot away from the TV and computer, and study as best I can. Making note cards can help with some subjects (history, foreign languages). With math, I pick problems from the book or homework and work those problems until I completely understand how to get the answer.

I try and give myself rewards for having completed something. Such as, when I finish reading this chapter, I can play a round of my favorite video game or treat myself to a snack. Or, set a timer for 15 minutes and then treat yourself to a walk around the block or something if you got through and focused on your work the whole time.

You could also plan long-term rewards, like if you get a certain grade on the test, you can buy a new outfit. If you are a minor, see if you could work something out like this with your parents. Of course, bribes aren’t the reason to do everything, but it could help in a particularly difficult or uninteresting subject.

You are studying to get an education. Throughout life we can’t only choose the things that we like there is always bad stuff too. Don’t let your feelings about a subject or a teacher interfere with your learning. If you have trouble learning something, find someone who can tutor you..

Dear Aurora,

When I was in high school, I had a couple of classes that I very much disliked, for whatever reason! There was one in particular, though, that I truly hated. It was math, the dreaded math, the evil math, etc…! I was not good in this class at all. I felt like I couldn’t learn in this area. In fact, my teachers told me so?!? They gave up on me. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, no problem. Algebra, calculus, geometry…Grrrrr!

But, then I caught on to something. Maybe, I’m looking at this all wrong? Maybe, I just need some insight from another person’s perspective. So, I asked friends for help. Several tried to help with no good outcome. I simply couldn’t understand. Then, one day, a guy from my school, who was also in the orchestra with me, heard that I needed help. He was surprised! He said to me, “How is it that you can play three instruments, can conduct scores of music and yet, cannot understand math?” Now, I was really baffled! He went on to explain that music and math go hand in hand. Music is math and math is music. He told me that math is nothing more than a composition played out. He worked with me for two weeks. It finally hit me and I turned every problem into a song! Evil math was going down! After that, I floored my teachers. They couldn’t believe the change. Well, it was no thanks to them but, I realized that my future was not dependent on them; it was dependent on me.

I loved history. But, sometimes, I had trouble memorizing all the dates and events in order. So, what did I do? I turned that into a song as well! I would make up a jingle or a funny to remind myself what date went with a certain event. I made a game out of it! School suddenly became a lot easier. It wasn’t so demanding and the hurdles were easier to jump.

There are friends that will help, if asked. You might just try group studies. I know it truly helped me! I showed my friends who hated history how to make it fun. We then all passed with flying colors!

I made it by memorizing the headings of important paragraphs,as far as tests go .Try getting into what the people were all about .(if subject is about people )

Now algebra ,math or trig is different .Try to simplify as much as possible ,find some one that can explain it to you better then the teacher can ,sometimes teachers are to technical.

Hope this helps some .

I used to make one step back for a while, take a shower, prepare a cool instant coffee and go back in my books. When I was a student, I wanted to be totally alone, have my things the place I want them and generally wanted to feel comfortable. Then I was pressing myself to focus, no tv, no radio etc. Try it!

take a new approach to it. maybe you might be interested in something in that subject later on. sometimes having a study buddy will make it more interesting for you, or at least you wont be the only one suffering.. lol.

I don’t think you can force yourself to study something you hate.

Just give yourself a break. It can’t be that bad. Take your time and when you’re done reward yourself with something you do like.
