There are many organizations out there, beside the public schools..we need to influence participation better and the benefits would be quite remarkable…consider everyone actually understanding what they have just signed!

Literacy begins at a young age, I believe. The best way to ensure high adult literacy rates is to instill a love for reading at a young age. It all begins with parents reading to their children and then continuing to insist they read throughout their lives.

Schools can help by providing more interesting reading materials at the elementary level and progressing to more mature and classical literature as their grade progresses.

I believe we should get more of these promised “lotto monies” back into schools; our most important tomorrows are in our young people and the educators who teach them. We pay more money to athletes and drunk superstars than the most important people in the world, our educators? Hmmm…

We need to get more organized in our efforts to pass legislation to encourage education for teachers, students and the parents that support the students in something like tax benefits etc.

What a great idea, a campaign on television that gets the public thinking, we could advertise just like they do a margarine, “its the new Literacy Spread, it promises to raise your i.q.”…..for those who are stuck in that television/video world, it might even reach them.

Another idea is to get some public school teaching into people’s homes for those who think they’re “too old” or ashamed to seek help[ they could go on line and fill in the gaps where they need help (maybe even get a certificate of completion).

Young people in inner-city situations must get some tailored help to meet their needs; we that live in safe homes outside their world just don’t understand what these young people go through to even get to the school room door. I don’t have the answers for this, but sure do get that this is a screaming need.

Thanks so much for this powerful question.

Above all, parents need to read to their kids, and adults in general need to take kids to the library and encourage them to find books that they enjoy reading.

And, to those in the educational system: Stop punishing school kids by making them answer those annoying questions at the end of stories. Have a class discussion, but don’t ruin the reading experience by making kids answer those questions!
