always honest

How can my son’s college application shine?

My son is soon to graduate from high school, my question as a mom, is how can we make his application shine above others. We are dumbfounded on this and would like suggestions from people who have gone through this already. Your response is greatly appreciated.

1. Let your son write it. Keep him on task, but don’t hover or give help when it isn’t asked for. Inspire his creative confidence in himself by letting his succeed or fail on his own.

2. Take out anything hackneyed or cliche’ like “Make his application shine” and “We are dumbfounded.”

3. Leave the cow at home. In other words, don’t try to beef it up. Make it seem completely honest and un-embellished. As a matter of fact, strip it down to the barest of essentials. IN the words of Joe Friday, of Dragnet, “Just the facts ma’am.”

4. Make it crystal clear. Break out information like you would on a job resume. Volunteer work, academic achievements, honors…

5. Have someone check it for grammar (not you unless he asks you).

Just fill out what they want on it, no need to make it shine, its not that hard to get into college.

I was admitted to 6 different schools.

NKU- the one I chose

UC

Duke

Ohio State

Dayton

West Virgina

I didnt put anything special on the apps.

CONTENT makes applications shine. PRESENTATION, never.

Hope he has lots of extracurricular activity and student leadership and great grades on his application.
