Help with creative writing?

I’m taking a required creative writing class and I’m not doing so well. I have never been all that good with writing I have always done better in math. I need advice on how I can do better.

I’m not sure of the scope of your class – are you limited to fiction or poetry? I understand your difficulty, as I’m a writing person, not a math person and math felt impossible in college. Talk to your teacher, express your concerns and questions. You may find success (and pleasure!) writing short fiction or prose poems. I won’t say they’re less difficult, but they are generally much more immediately satisfying. You would do well to invest in a used copy of “Flash Fiction”, “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros for ‘quick’ fiction/prose, or dig up a New Yorker magazine or two. You’ll find inspiration and example, but of course don’t plagiarize! Enjoy the course, don’t be anxious about it. I have an MFA in CW and there is no right answer in anything you write! Best of luck!

This is one way. Close your eyes. Sit in silence for a while. Where does your mind go? Who’s there? What’re they doing? Write it down. The rest will do itself.
