what does this poem mean?

Silence

My father used to say,

“Superior people never make long visits,

have to be shown Longfellow’s grave

nor the glass flowers at Harvard.

Self reliant like the cat —

that takes its prey to privacy,

the mouse’s limp tail hanging like a shoelace from its mouth —

they sometimes enjoy solitude,

and can be robbed of speech

by speech which has delighted them.

The deepest feeling always shows itself in silence;

not in silence, but restraint.”

Nor was he insincere in saying, “`Make my house your inn’.”

Inns are not residences.

The poet is saying that you don’t need to explain things to smart people. They can figure out most things for themselves. Nor do they overstay their welcome – they know when to leave. They can be happy alone as they know how to entertain themselves. They are often quiet people, who don’t mind silence and solitude.

“Make my house your inn.” means “You are welcome to stay for a short time, but like at an inn, you leave in the morning.”

not that im any poem specialist, but its not what other people think its what u think about the poem. but im guessing that she was trying to descirbe how you dont have to be the smartest person in the world or the prettiest. or to not change thy self into a vain person. but to keep your own world the way only you want.
