Leadership positions typically mean in student, civic, or religious organizations. Vice President of the French Club in HS, treasurer of the Young (your denomination here) Group, and the like. It will be tough to become a leader in a group that you just join, so an alternative plan means finding a volunteer, civic, service group and working with that. Make sure that some of your activities have responsibility (leadership). Habitat for Humanity always needs volunteers, and does not have enough young people so you could work with them and recruit young people etc.
Leadership in this context means can you organize, plan, motivate, and take responsibility. Since as a new member of some club you probably won’t become President, find an alternative way to demonstrate leadership qualities in working with other people. To rise quickly to a position of responsibility, find a small group.
