Writing an essay on my own essay style?

For summer homework, I need to write an essay describing my essay style… and I have no idea what this means. Any tips?

Here are some questions to help you think about your own style. You might try asking some friends about their own writing styles, so you can get a comparison. Or, you can ask friends what they notice about your writing style.

1. Do you use a lot of adjectives or adverbs? Or are you not a very descriptive writer?

2. Do you like to write in first person (using “I”) or second person (“you”) a lot?

3. Are your sentences really long? Do you use a lot of commas, semicolons, etc.?

4. Do you like to explain things a lot, or do you like to jump from one idea to another?

5. Do you use really complicated vocabulary and grammar, or do you like to “keep things simple”?

6. Do you like to write using a lot of examples (e.g. real life stories)? Or do you write using a lot of theory (e.g. ‘concepts’ like ‘evolution’)? Or maybe a combination of both?

There are a lot more questions I could add, but this is just to get you started. Good luck! 😉

There is an excellent website about writing style at : http://mr.schoolsuccess.tripod.com and if you click on the link that says ask Mr. Schoolsuccess for school advice and attach a copy of your essay. It should come back with revisions!

Most people have their own style but they can change it at will. All the adolescent series–Tom Swift, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys–were written by numerous different authors who were simply given an outline. ‘Naked Came the Stranger’ (1969) was a deliberately bad sex-filled novel written by two dozen journalists (one for each chapter) simply to prove how bad American literary taste had become. It hit the best seller list for a week. The better you are at writing, the easier it is to change your style.

I notice you are preparing to write or want info about the college essay. You might want to check this article out before you write it, or while you are trying to choose your topic.
