Sydney’s present age is one-half of Marcus’s present age. In 12 years, Sydney’s age will be five-eights of Marcus’s age. Find their present ages.

Let’s start with what we know.

Syd’s age is half of Marc’s

S=1/2 M

Syd, in 12 years, will be 5/8 of Marc’s age

S+12=5/8M

Now, replace ‘S’ in the second equation with ‘1/2M’, because it is equal to ‘S’

1/2M+12=5/8M

Now you can solve that and find Marc’s age.

Than you plug that answer into the first equation

S= 1/2 M

s=x+12

and m=2x+12

given that: (x+12)=5/8(2x+12)

or 8x+96=10x+60

or 2x=36

or x=18=Sydney

so Marcus=36
