Why is it important to know and understand the proper terminolgy for anatomical planes, direction and body cavities?

Its a convention used in the medical and scientific fields in order to refer to specific organs and locations in the bodies of organisms. Say you had a piece of a dinosaur fossil, I could tell you that it was, for example, the distal portion of the femur and you would know that it was the bottom half of the thigh bone.
