Were I to guess, friction. A compass needle must be strongly magnetized for its weight, because otherwise there would be a lot of resistance to rotation on the pivot, and the needle would stop turning before it reached magnetic north.

A magnet can upset the accuracy of a compass. There is true north and magnetic north….and there would be some sort of pull leading to error.
