It was called aqua, water, wasser, etc. (depending where in the world you happened to be living) a long time before people knew it was made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. In terms of the history of water, that was a very recent discovery.

Hope this helps

Cause water is 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen its just the chemicals in the water so for short its called H2o

Water, H2O, is composed of only two elements, hydrogen and oxygen (assuming no impurities!) The H2O means that every molecule of water has two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. Each of these elements has a distinct beginning: The hydrogen came from the Big Bang, while the oxygen was manufactured inside massive stars that blew up billions of years ago.

Water (H2O, HOH) is the most abundant molecule on Earth’s surface, composing of about 70% of the Earth’s surface as liquid and solid state in addition to being found in the atmosphere as a vapor. It is in dynamic equilibrium between the liquid and vapor states at standard temperature and pressure. At room temperature, it is a nearly colorless, tasteless, and odorless liquid. Many substances dissolve in water and it is commonly referred to as the universal solvent. Because of this, water in nature and in use is rarely clean, and may have some properties different than those in the laboratory. However, there are many compounds that are essentially, if not completely, insoluble in water. Water is the only common, pure substance found naturally in all three states of matter—for other substances, see Chemical properties.

The liquid we call water become named some years previously its composition become comprehend and for an prolonged time it become the only oxide of hydrogen regular. the different oxide of H is hydrogen peroxide to tell apart it from the monoxide (H2O). The according to in peroxide ability greater oxygen than interior the common oxide.

The formula H20 tells us that one molecule of water is comprised of 2 atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen bonded together. The bonds which hold the hydrogen and oxygen together are called covalent bonds – they are very strong.

Let’s look at a picture of a molecule of water: In this picture the two hydrogens are represented by white spheres and the oxygen by a red sphere.

IMAGE SOURCE: “Chemistry and Life”, 4th Edition, John W. Hill, Dorothy M. Feigl, and Stuart J. Baum, Macmillan Publishing Company, New York, 1993

In this second picture, the hydrogens are shown as white spheres, the oygen as a red sphere. The ‘sticks’ holding the hydrogens to the oxygen represent covalent bonds.

Joke, right?

Every language had a word for water thousands of years before anyone ever heard of hydrogen or oxygen — why would anyone rename it?

maybe because it is made from two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.. but hell what do i know… i only did a math degree… clearly i don’t know anything about chemistry…

why is it called water… that is an etymological question… perhaps we should consult the dictionary and maybe even an encyclopedia…

“Etymology: Middle English, from Old English wæter; akin to Old High German wazzar water”

Two Hydrogen molecules (H2) and one Oxygen molecule (O) is the chemical formula for water.

As for the history and the discoverer I can’t help, sorry
