The question is really, which of these items is an element in the table of elements?

Think about it.

Carbon di-oxide: What you are saying is, carbon atoms and oxygen atoms, mixed up in a “MIXTURE!”

Silicon Di-Oxide: Same idea. Silicon atoms and two (di) oxygen atoms per molecule to make a “MIXTURE!”

Sand: Okay, what is in sand? It could be silicon, iron, lead, calcium carbonate or salts from sea. Lots of stuff, right? A “MIXTURE!”

The only one left is good old SI, silicon. The atom. The element. NOT a MIXTURE of anything, just atoms making up the element Silicon.

Understand now? Good.

Think. Remember that a mixture is not chemically combined but physically combined. Sand is definitely a mixture composed of minerals and dusts.
