You are so right, my dear. Would you like practice in determining what a run-on sentence looks like? Here is a site on which you can practice that skill: http://www.quia.com/pop/35933.html

I found this site, too. It is cute and fun. I felt a little silly, but I can see where younger students can have fun with the site. http://www.brainpop.com/english/grammar/runonsentences/

Yes, when DID we say that? I don’t know, but a grammar expert out there somewhere said it. It is also known as a “fused” sentence. You cannot always just add a comma, because you end up with what is known as a comma splice. Why? Dunno.

Here is another site I found interesting: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/runons.htm

Hm. A run-on sentence contains two complete thoughts – two parts that each have a subject and predicate – and the two parts are NOT dependent on each other to make sense (joined by “because,” “so,” etc.) Even though you join your two complete thoughts with “and,” your two complete thoughts really don’t follow each other; they are two different thoughts. It would be better to write, “When a man loves a woman, he asks for her hand in marriage. Once they fall out of love, they get a divorce.” Better for ACCURACY might be: “When a man loves a woman, he may ask for her hand in marriage. If they fall out of love, they may decide to get a divorce.”

i learned about em in 5th grade? early middle school we got deeper into it,but the fundamentals of identifying a run on sentence was taught to me in 5th…

I’m a Senior in High school now, educational English standards have changed over years,so kids might be learning that in about 3rd or 4th now.and it depends what state you live in,some states move faster than others in terms of teaching,i myself live in California
