What type of monarchy was there during the reign of Louis XVI?

I know what he did, but I cannot find much on what type of monarchy there was in relation to him. Any information on the limited monarchy related to him would be VERY helpful. I would prefer any information to be on Sparknotes, because it makes sense to me.

I do believe that it’s a limited monarchy. But I don’t know what that meant. Was it parliament that enforced this? I remember reading somewhere that he had a limited monarchy, and most power was in the hands of the legislative something or other..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A limited monarchy is another name for a constitutional monarchy — like Britain and Denmark have today for example. The royalty are figureheads with extremely limited powers.

Louis XIV had an absolute monarchy.

Here’s an interesting site that should help explain the differences for you.

As to Louis VXI – he was forced into accepting this. He was held in Paris and then his crown was “removed” until he signed and swore allegiance to the new French constitution (Sept. 1791). However, the monarchy was abolished a year later. Louis was later tried for treason and executed (Dec.. 1792) So, it’s arguable whether or not Louis really participated in a limited, or constitutional, monarchy at all.
