What’s the subject in this sentence?

“Our mail carrier broke his right leg.”

Is it “our” or “mail carrier”? We’re doing sentence diagramming for homework…not that you needed to know that, but anyway, does anyone know the answer?

Dalton is correct, “mail carrier” is the subject of the sentence.

A good way I use to remember is what is the main focus of the phrase. It’s not “our”, cause we’re not talking about “us”. It’s not his leg, something happened to the mail carrier first, then his leg. So basically, we are talking about something that happened to the mail carrier.

Mail carrier.

One quick tip on locating the subject of any sentence: Ask yourself: who does the action? In this case, who broke his leg?

Answer it and you find the subject.
