The area was basically a swamp. There was not a good source of drinking water, and so many died from saltwater poisoning which led to dysentry(diarrahea), fevers, and infection. The settlers were isolated from hunting large game such as deer and bears, and so they quickly killed off the small game that inhabited their region, thus leading to starvation. They also were attacked by indians often, in particular the Paspahegh indians.

disease, famine, Algonquians attacking. Many of the settlers who came over were ‘gentlemen’, they had never had to work or do hard labor before and most of them ended up dying. Only 60 of the original 214 settlers survived the winter after Captain John Smith left.
