Sorry it’s a lot of years ago I have worked with. Perhaps this gives you an idea. The normal digital device has two states at input and output. This devices have a fan in and a fan out. So the number of chips you can connect is limited. On a three state chip you can switch input and output to high impedance so it is off line and does not eat up current. Look for chips with an “enable input”.
