I hope you don’t believe Anthony H that it is “impotent.” Rather, it is “important” because as the first answerer says, if you don’t know it, you’re bound to repeat it.
History is more than just facts and dates. It is historians’ perspective of what happened, how it happened, and most importantly, WHY.
History is also called “HIS Story” because it is different based on who is telling the “story.” Different historians have different perspectives on what happened, how it happened, and WHY it happened.
History is facts, but the facts may not always be true.

History is the study of the past, focused on human activity and leading up to the present day. More precisely, history is the continuous, systematic narrative and research of past events as relating to the human race; as well as the study of all events in time, in relation to humanity.
