100cm is one meter. The clue to working in metrics is to understand the ‘totem pole’ of the metrics. One meter is the starting point. A decimeter (deci is latin for 10 – the word dime comes from it) is a tenth of a meter. A centimeter (cent is the latin word for 100 – a cent, or penny, comes from it) is one hundredth of a meter.

Going the other way a kilometer (kilo is latin for 1,000) is 1,000 meters.

Here;s the lineup

millimetre = 1/1000 of a metre

centimetre = 1/100 of a metre

decimetre = 1/10 of a metre

metre

decameetre = 10 metres

kilometre = 1000 metres

myriametre = 10,000 metres.

The same holds true with weights, only it’s grams, not metres, so you have:

milligrams,

centigrams,

decigrams,

grams

decagrams

hectograms (100 grams)

kilgrams

myriamgrams (10 kg)

quintals (100 kg)

tonne (1,000 kg)

It’s a pretty simple system, really, and much easier than the 16 ounces to a pound, or 12 inches to a foot, three feet to a yard, 5280 feet to a mile rigamarole.

This is all a matter of shifting decimals (except the Kelvin thing.
