The Norman invasion in 1066 by William the Conquerer (who was the Duke of Normandy) and his success at The Battle of Hastings led to the wide spread use of Chancery Standard, a London-based English language. This was helped by William Caxton introducing the printing press to England in the 1470’s and slightly later by Richard Pynson.

Yep, the Norman invasion in 1066 did a real number on Old English.

Pretty much doubled the modern English vocabulary.

(Okay, I can’t guarantee–or claim–that last bit is entirely true, but the Norman invasion basically created Middle English).
