The poet draws a parallel between mathematics (cf. tangent, circles, reciprocal) and the individual, as an interactive being (cf. touching, common experience, collective, reciprocal). In order to compare and contrast the two, (s)he makes use of antithesis and comparisons:

(A) antithesis:

“All of us” versus “alone”: we are alone even when we are in the middle of a crowd;

“not uncommon” vs. “singularity”: despite being different from one another, we are not “distinctive”, that is, we are “common” (= “not uncommon”).

(B) Comparison:

“touching” (= “tangent”), that is, we share experiences, we interact with people around us.

“co-incident” (= connection), that is, we mingle, we belong (= “collective tangency”).

“circles” (= groups of people who interact socially); “reciprocal” (= people interacting, exchanging ideas, etc.).

In the conclusion (last 3 lines), the poet adds two negatives (“never” + “less”; “we are never less alone”), which equal one positive (= we are always alone). In so doing, (s)he admits that aside from the fact that we (= all of us, including him/her) are alone, we are “no longer only”, that is, we are not the best (or even extremely unique). As (s)he said before (second line), “we are not uncommon [two negatives > positive] in our singularity”. Like the numbers, we are common. Despite being common, we are varied, different from one another, although this does not mean that we are exceptional or distinctive. We are human beings–common but “antithetic” creatures. This is precisely what we share with numbers.

Second, by reading it as it is punctuated, here is my interpretation of what it means:

Everyone is a singular, unique, individual.

When we communicate with each other,

we find we have common experiences,

so we are not alone in all things. Sharing

ourselves with others creates a ripple

effect that comes back to us & helps us

redefine ourselves.

So now we know we are still alone, by ourself,

but there are others who share some of the

same life experiences that we have.

We are all individuals, but our individuality makes us all similar. We define our similarities and they tie us together.

The sum of these similarities then come back and redefine us.

In the endless connection of our similarities, we remain unique, separate individuals, but are never alone.
