I believe the pros/cons will depend on age group.

Some families have both parents working. No one is home during the day. If the school does not know this, the child is lefet alone for too long.

Security of the students is at risk. More people are required to watch the kids as they walk home.

Some students might not return to school in the afternoon. Trunacy increases.

Some poor families might not let the school know they are not providing a healthy lunch during the break. If that child remained on campus, they would get a healthy meal.
