Well in peace time the slogan I remember is Join the Marines see the world, so there is an advantage, you are paid to “see the world” that is another advantage. If you like killing things and have thought of what killing people would be like, here you can kill all the people you want to.

Disadvantages You do not pick what parts of the world you get to see. Mostly the parts of the world you get to see are places you would rather never see.

You have no rights you must do whatever you are told to do. You have a high chance of getting killed. If you do not like killing things and think you would hate to kill a person this is not the place for you.

advantages:

experience – learn life skills (although it might be argued that you’re probably not going to need a lot of the skills you learn in the marine – this is untrue however, especially if you pursue a similar career)

college scholarships

experience – career experience

opens up career options – (i’ve always wanted to be a detective for the police department but i’m not sure if i can do the prerequisites.)

helping the country/nationalism – (pretty cheesy though, and i’m not so fond of nationalism)

disadvantages:

risky

wasting a couple years if you want to be like a….salesperson. or a stripper.

mental scarring (or toughening-up, which sounds like more of a good thing. depends how sensitive you are.)

i mean you can die

i can’t think of any other disadvantages. but you can die. (although, it could be argued that combat work isn’t all you can do in the marine corps – nurse work, computer science crap, etc.)

the biggest disadvantage, you may get deployed and not come home, but i’m sure you know that. along with you may be deployed and it may be a LONG time before you see family and friends again. needing psychological treatment for war related PTSD.

the advantages would be: high moral, being proud to keep the ******* who don’t support the military safe, keeping in good health through routine training, making lifelong friends, having a normal paycheck and pension if you’re in long enough, having a job to be proud of, having the ability to help others, going to other countries to learn other cultures.
