George Washington, our leader and first president was a Federalist…it’s a much easier debate to be pro-federalism than against….

Anti Federalists were against a strong national government, thinking the each state should make it’s own laws. Today, these people are commonly called “State Rights” issues.

One reason for the bill of rights was added, was to use personal rights to help build support for a federal system.

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Bill_of_Rights

“Initially drafted by James Madison in 1789, the Bill of Rights was written at a time when ideological conflict between Federalists and anti-Federalists, dating from the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, threatened the Constitution’s ratification. The Bill was influenced by George Mason’s 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights, the 1689 English Bill of Rights, works of the Age of Enlightenment pertaining to natural rights, and earlier English political documents such as the Magna Carta (1215). The Bill was largely a response to the Constitution’s influential opponents, including prominent Founding Fathers, who argued that it failed to protect the basic principles of human liberty.”

As I understand it, the Federalists wanted a strong central government and were not that interested in states’ rights. As an anti-Federalist, you would be interested in keeping the government small and keeping lot of legislative power in the hands of the state governments so that it is up to them to make their own laws. State sovereignty is one of our essential constitutional freedoms!
