Three chemistry questions?

I need you to walk me through the steps. We’re doing conversions.

1. How many days will a 500.ml bottle of cough syrup last if a sick child must take 2 teaspoons of the medicine every day until it is gone?

2. If it is 8.6×10 to the tenth miles to a star, approzimately how many years would it take a space ship traveling at 100,000 m/s to reach it?

3. If the average thickness of a peice of paper is 3.23 micrometers, how many sheets of that paper will fit into a bin that is 8 inches tall?

She wants us to use significant figures too. I’m not very good at chemistry and I just can’t figure these questions out. I need whoever answers to walk me through the steps. These are conversion problems. Thanks a lot!

There are 4.9 mL in 1 tsp.

Child takes 2 tsp (2 x 4.9 =10.8 mL) of medicine per day.

To get the answer, you need to find out how many times 10.8 goes into 500mL (500 / 10.8 = ?)

First convert the mileage into meters.

(One mile = 1609 meters)

So 8.6 x 10^10 mi x 1609 m per mi = ? meters

Next, find out how long it takes to get there. Convert 100,000 m/s into m/year.

(a) 100,000 m/s x 60 s/min =

(b) multiply your answer to (a) x 60min/hr =

(c) multiply your answer to (b) x 24 hrs/day =

(d) multiply (c) x 365 day/yr

(Sorry, no calculator in front of me)

Finally, take your first answer (the # of meters) and divide it by your final answer to (d) above. This will tell you how many years it will take.

I know that 1 micrometer = 0.0001 centimeters, so do that first:

(a) 3.23 micrometers x 0.0001 cm = ?

Next, convert cm to in (0.39 in = 1 cm)

(b) take your answer to (a) x 0.39 in = ?

Finally, find out how many times your answer to (b) goes into 8 inches.

(c) 8 inches divided by (answer b) = # of sheets of paper!

Like I said, I don’t exactly have a calculator in front of me so you’ll have to try the calculations yourself…. HOPE THIS HELPS!
