Thomas Hobbes (5 April 1588 – 4 December 1679) was an English philosopher, whose famous 1651 book Leviathan established the agenda for nearly all subsequent Western political philosophy.
Although Hobbes is today best remembered for his work on political philosophy, he contributed to a diverse array of fields, including history, geometry, theology, ethics, general philosophy, and what would now be called political science. Additionally, Hobbes’s account of human nature as self-interested cooperation has proved to be an enduring theory in the field of philosophical anthropology.

Most subsequent political theory develops from his concepts of the social contract nature of government and the natural state of mankind being harsh and selfish. No strong democratic, republican or parliamentary system can be easily justified without resorting to the belief in the necessity of strong government to protect mankind from man’s base impulses.
