a+(a+1)+(a+2)+……+(a+16)
which is equal to 306(given)
if we combine the variable a we get
17 a’s
if we combine the numbers we get
1+2+3+4+….+16
we can use the formula for the sum of ‘n’ numbers
(n(n+1))/2
here n=16
therefore (16*(16+1))/2
= (16*17)/2
= 136
from the original equation we formed
we get
17a+136=306
now solving for a
17a = 306-136
17a = 170
a=170/17
a=10
therefore the first number is 10
