Summer Reading Help…?

My daughter is going to enter 7th grade. She ha to read a work of poetry by the end of the summer. The books listed there are to “juvenile” as she puts it, so what do you recommend for her? (She loves reading Shakespeare and classical poetry.) She was thinking of the Iliad or the Odyssey; but does that count as poetry? Here’s what she’s going to read if it helps to identify her reading taste:

Sci. Fi/ Fantasy: Brave New World

Mystery: Murder on the Orient Express

Poetry:????

Please help: either Iliad/Odyssey or some other poetry book?

The Odyssey is fantastic. Its an epic tale, and I am sure she would very much enjoy it, especially if she is inot fantasy or mythology. I read it in my Freshman year of high school, so it may be a little challenging, but if she is up to the challenge, than encourage her to do so.

Try some Edgar Allen Poe, they may not seem like the most advanced peace of literature, but they are inticing and intense. Get his tales of the Arabesque and Grotesque, it has a great collection. He also has some poetry.

I read the Iliad and the Odyssey in my freshman year in college. How about Beowulf or The Canterbury Tales? Or some Edgar Allan Poe? For something more modern, she could look into Maya Angelou’s “Why Don’t You Sing?” or “I Shall Not Be Moved.”

Iliad and Odyssey are pretty challenging novels. I think it counts as poetry, and if she is up for the challenge i think she should go for it, she would impress her teacher!
