Athens because children were treated better. They were allowed to go to school. Sparta ruled under oligarchy while Athens were Democratic. Athens govt. was equal and fair and oligarchy made Sparta war-like, but that was what helped them surivive.

But, I would say Athens is better simply because education is above strength. Having both is even better, though.

athens-they promoted learning, unlike the spartans who brought up their people in a very cruel manner. Spartans encouraged stealing and lying, and often killed people from other polis’s just for fun. On another note, Athens had a democracy, one of the first. Athens produced many people that enriched western culture- Pericles, Phidias, Socrates, Plato, and Arcimedes. – hope this helps! – kelsey

Athens without a doubt, they were a democracy with prolific thinkers such as Plato, Socrates, etc. In Athens all citizens were considered equal. Education focused on physical and mental skills.

Sparta was a nation ran by two kings (it was totalitarian) elected by the Assembly. The nation’s education focused on military strategies and war.
