It depends…. If you are writing a letter…. and starting it with “my dear grandfather”…. then I would write it like this…

______________________________

My Dear Grandfather,

How are you doing? I’m doing fine… blah blah blah….

______________________________

If you are starting a sentence in an essay of yours…. then it would be “My grandfather”….. and if it is in the middle of a sentence, then it would be “my grandfather”….

Hope this helps!!!

The way I learned it is, if you can replace the word grandfather with your grandfather’s name, then capitalize the word grandfather. Hence, Dear Grandfather is correct because you could also write it as Dear William (or whatever your grandfather’s name is). In the case of “my grandfather,” grandfather should not be capitalized.

depends on how you use it in a sentence. For example, My grandfather was the kindest man I knew. Or, My Grandfather, do you wish to wear the red sweater or the blue one?

generally no

If you say I gave this to Grandfather, that is capitalized because it is used as his “name,” like what you might call him to his face.

If you say My grandfather was a plumber, then No because you are referring to the relationship, not his name.

That’s how I think of it: if you could substitute his proper name then capitalize it.
