Method of substitution.
x^2 + y^2 = 81 …….(1)
x = 2y^2 – 162 ……(2)
From (1):
y^2 = 81 – x^2 …..(3)
Substitute for y^2 from (3) in (2):
x = 162 – 2x^2 – 162
2x^2 + x = 0
x(2x + 1) = 0
x = 0 or x = -1/2
Substitute for x in (1).
When x = 0:
y^2 – 81 = 0
(y – 9)(y + 9) = 0
y = +/- 9.
When x = -1/2:
y^2 = 81 – 1/4 = 323 / 4
y^2 – 323 / 4 = 0
(y – sqrt(323) / 2)(y + sqrt(323) / 2) = 0
y = +/- sqrt(323) / 2.
