Trouble getting started on an essay (Scarlet Letter)?

I’m supposed to analyze how Hawthorne’s commentary of the Puritan community exemplifies his attitude toward human nature. I have no idea where to get started.

We as humans have a tendency to believe that we are better than others. We like to mock others for wrong doing or point fingers. WE all have a letter A on us. . Whether put there rightfully or not, each of us knows our own faults, sins, and wrong doings. But it is up to each of us to over come our letters and not worry what others say. But due our best to improve ourselves. Am I on the right track?

Hawthorne is critiquing the hypocrisy of society. The characters who condemn adultery cite the bible, yet to forget to give credence to one of the most important of Jesus’ teachings, “let he without sin cast the first stone.” Jesus is in fact saying this at what would have been the stoning of an adulterer. However, the novel is much bigger than this one issue. Hawthorne uses this puritan community as a microcosm for the world throughout time, The Scarlet Letter is a social commentary on the hypocrisy, indolence and arrogance of the human race, so quick to point out others flaws instead of looking at their own.

Come on, Aristotle, you’re extremely bright. Try putting yourself in the story. If that book was written in “your world” time, how would his values change “your world”, make you feel, etc. Hope that helps, it’s what I do when I read.
