why would it be incorrect to refer to the Mount Rushmore sculptures as statues?

They are not free standing so I wouldn’t consider them to be statues.

Because statues are free standing and Mt Rushmore ain’t.
The faces are carved out of the stone.

Because they are just faces. Those are called busts. Statues include the whole form of a person.

Because they are incomplete in that they’re only 2D not 3D where one would be able to walk around and see the back of them.
