The simile is “we are as the deer”
In other words, two people are being compared to deer walking single file.
They’re walking in single file–isn’t that almost self explanatory?
If you’re really WITH someone, you walk side by side.
If you’re walking in single file, obviously the two people aren’t really close.
One person is facing the BACK of another.
