Simile: comparison of two things using “like” or “as”

1. I swam like a dolphin.

2. I was as mad as a bull.

Metaphor: not really comparing two things but treating them as if they were the same

1. The snow was a blanket over the earth.

Hyperbole: A figure of speech in which statements are exaggerated

1. I was so mad I wanted to kill him.

2. He swam faster than an Olympic gold medalist.

Oxymoron: A figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms

1. The jeans were pretty ugly.

2. We were alone together.

The word oxymoron is an oxymoron, since in Greek oxy- means “sharp”, and “moros”- means dull.

Personification: Where non-human things and objects are given human-like traits

1. The computer angrily belched out dark smoke.

2. The wind howled through the trees.

Onomatopeia: A word/s that imitates the sound it is describing

1. So if you were describing the computer keys, you could say clack clack clack

2. Or if you were talking about a cat, use meow.

Hope it helps a little 😛
