school project?

Hey guys, well i need help coming up with an idea for a project for my IB math studies class. We are required to do a project thats not due until may. I really want to do the project on sewing or something with making clothes but it needs to involve some difficult math, and needs to be kind of like an experiment, where I’m figuring out something. Its says on the handout (to give a more clear description) that..”This section focuses on the importance of choosing a topic that can offer a productive route of inquiry, involve the use of relative mathematics, and engage the interest and enthusiasm of the student” So if anyone has any ideas id really appreciate it! thanks!

Hello,

I don’t have any ideas on clothes, but how about some type of quilt. You could choose one large geometric figure, or a bunch of smaller ones for the quilt. And I’m not talking about (boring) a square, a triangle, a circle, etc…, I’m talking about some really cool looking spirography kind of pattern. Something crazy to look at, but something that you could measure and cut out using geometry and math techniques that are familiar to you. (Check dusty old math textbooks in the public library for cool figures, they loved that kind of stuff back in the day (pre 1940))

Good luck to you

You have a great idea already. You would be designing clothing alright but, not just any clothing. Do some research on the materials used to design and construct spacesuits. This would involve determining what materials can withstand the extremes of temperatures in space the best, which I’m sure would involve some understanding of Physics and Chemistry (difficult math). I’m also certain your fellow students would have many questions as well as being enthused with you about coming up with such a great idea. Good luck! I hope I’ve been of assistance. Thanks for the 2 points.
