Both answers are number 1.

Rose is a type of flower,… as fir is a type of tree.

Pair and Pare are words that sound the same, but spelled differently, as is answer number 1.

There are a number of factors that contribute to high prices but supply and demand is the main reason by far. 99 % of the roses you buy are hybrids, meaning you will never be able to plant a rose plant from seed. The canes are grafted onto a rootstock known for resistance to disease, that’s the first price increase. The varieties all have creators or makers, who do the breeding as their job, so they need to be paid, that’s the second markup. The varieties are all patented, which costs money, third markup. The plants produced require at least 6 months time, fertilizer, water, light, and land, all of which requires money, the next markup. Lastly, someone needs to harvest the roses, send them next day air in cooled trailers, which costs more money. To grow your own, you simply skip the last step, since the 4 previous steps are required to get the rose to the plant nursery. One of the florists I deal with usually sells 5 gallon roses at $32. As much as I love roses – I’d rather have a house full of gardenias! smile

For the first one, a rose is a type of flower, so the answer is 1 because a fir is a type of tree.

The second one is a homonym (words with the same pronunciation but different meanings) so the correct answer is also 1.
