i would find another map of the same era and compare the two. If possible ,I would try to find one that is the same scale and size, trace over tham with tracing paper and compare that way.

The boundary can be checked using a method called double meridian distance. By looking at the total distance north and the total distance east from a starting point you should arrive at a location given to you by the map. If you are off by say one foot north and one foot south then the total distance off would be determined by the pythagorian thereom or 1.41 feet. If your total perimeter was 1,410 feet your accuracy would be 1 in 1,000 or 0.01 percent.

don’t plagiarize
historical accounts of residents and travelers who have been to the area. paintings from the era.

if it was last weeks history you cold look at photographs and satellite imagery, but since this is history those things were not around. but then, how old of history? maybe photos were available, but if not you are stuck with paintings and drawings from books

a good way to determine this is the copyright date, more recent the better, and from a reputable publisher as well. e.g. national geographic.
