You’re kidding, right? Ever heard of abortion? Right to die? Gay marriage? Those are all hot button religious topics.

Well, the obvious answer would be the Iraq war. As much as people like to say that it is a question of oil and supremacy, it goes much deeper than that. The real problem is that we are fighting a religion, a belief system, not armies or men, and that is something we cannot defeat. Another example would be Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has been quoted as saying, “Israel must be wiped off the face of the map.” This, actually, leads to other political conflicts on the Israel-Palestine border, which the Israelites (quite correctly in my opinion) state that their claim on the land of Israel is the true one, and that the land is theirs. The Palestinians (and all Muslims, for that matter) believe that the elimination of the Zionists(Jews and Christians) are key in ushering in the reign of Allah. My final example (which may not be modern, depending on your point of view) would be World War II. While it is true that Hitler did hate the Jews, he hated all non-Aryans equally. This is because he and his superior officers had created their own religion; whose tenants of faith stated that the race of Germans was once a race of god-men who once ruled the earth but lost their powers when they mated with mere mortals. Hitler, and most of the German people by extension, believed that if the true Aryan race overcame the non-Aryans, then a new reign of god-men would begin.

the role played by a religion in politics can easily understood by two extreme examples … one being Bin Laden aspiring to convert America in to Muslim and the other extreme being Mynmar Military Junta’s suppression. One being fanatic and another being sublime. that should answer your question’s second part.

Just about every topic in politics is riddled with religon.

Right to die. Abortion. Military involvement in another culture. Conservitive politicians are STRONGLY rooted in Religon.

Mind you most do one thing and say another.
