A telephone number consists of seven digits, the first three representing the exchange. How many different telephone numbers are possible within the 537 exchange? please explain your answer.

537-0000 all the way through 537-9999

537 – _ _ _ _

In each position you have a possible 10 numbers that can go there. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9.

So multiply 10 times 10 times 10 times 10 (since there are 4 available spots)

10*10*10*10 = 10,000

I’m not going to tell you the answer flat out…but here’s something to think about. Once you have the 537 exchange, those numbers are fixed. Every possibility will be 537-xxxx. At that point, all you have to worry about what the xxxx is. At that point, the different numbers are those ranging from 0000 to 9999.
