Reading a book then looking up words the words?

I’m reading a book that has a lot of weird words that I have to look up to completely understand. The problem is that its taking me forever to read the book since I have to keep looking up words. Should I just read it straight through without looking up the words?

As you read, write down the words you don’t understand & the page number. After you’re done, look them up and go back to read the paragraphs knowing what they mean.

Not currently a college student. I finished school… umm.. a few years ago. Looking up every word really depends on what you are studying and how well you understand the content. For example, look them all up if you are reading literature and can’t understand the story because you don’t know what most of the words mean. If you are reading history and DO understand what is happening without knowing every word, then don’t bother.

I would suggest looking the words up online. It will take much less time than flipping through the dictionary. Also, try reading the sentence around it. For example, if the book said, “The little girl strode toward the tree,” and you didn’t know what strode was (somehow…thats a really simple word) you would read around it and figure it out.

if its not a school book (witch i bet it is cause your in homework…) then i would just get a new book.

if it is a school book, then try reading on a sentance or two before immidiatly looking up a word. sometimes the sentances and words around it will help you understand what the word means. if that doesnt work, at least look up the words that are in important areas of the book. or just ask your teacher for advice.

well try to figure out the context first…that helps and if that doesnt work then looking them up is ur only option cuz reading it through first will not give u the full meaning
