Quotation around a quote?

I’m doing a paper over the Bible creation story.

Here’s my sentence. “And the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a companion who will help him.”

Is that correct as is? Because I don’t know where to put the quotation mark that matches up with the one before ‘And’. :/

The usual way to do it is to put double quote marks outside and single quote marks inside: “And the Lord god said, ‘it is not good . . .'” (That end part is closing the single quote mark, and then the double quote mark.)

Some modern books do it the other way around (single outside, double inside). The first is still more common.

What I do with quotations like that is this:

“And the LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a companion who will help him.’ ”

I’ve seen it done in books, so it must be grammatically correct….

I believe this is the way it is supposed to be quoted:

“And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a companion who will help him.'” I know it looks a little funny but it is a quote within a quote. Of course this all depends on whether you’re using MLA format. If you need any further help plug in MLA format in your search engine and there will be tons of sites you can go to for correct MLA format guidelines.
