Why do hardwood grow slow?
Why do softwood grow fast?
Why do hardwood take longer to become mature?
Why do softwood take less time become mature?

Maybe because hardwood consists of lots of plant cells with tough walls, while softwood might consist of bigger cells with water filling them up (not as strong, hence softwood). Filling cells up with water and expanding takes less time than waiting for the cambium of trees to grow more cells.
