Velocity is a vector, meaning that it has direction AND speed.

For example, this is important because when something is travelling in a circle at a constant SPEED, its VELOCITY can be said to be increasing (so it is actually ACCERLERATING) because its direction is changing.

Juliet B gave good answer, which is true, but also keep in mind that speed does not keep track of direction.
