Properly Citing Quotes?

If you want to site a quote in a bibliography, how would you do so? The example is an anecdote written by a French man in the Middle Ages. The quote was contained in another resource. How do I show that the French man said the quote?

Thanks.

You wouldn’t want to cite a quotation in a Bibliography, because you shouldn’t have a quote within a BIB.

However, if you are citing a quote that came from a book in the BIB while writing a paper you would just need to put the first author’s name from the Bibliography, or works cited, and the page number within parentheses.

Example.

Bibliography

Jones, M. The Fun of Electrocution. New York: Harcourt. 2003.

Citation:

(If it isn’t important WHO said the quote within the book):

…Hairdryers work better than toaster,” (Jones 27).

or, if it is important who said the quote within the book:

…as the Frenchman was fond of saying, “Hairdryers work better than toaster,” (Jones 27).

Just the name of the author and the page number within the parenthesis, then your punctuation that either ends the sentence, or a comma to continue the sentence.

You should say in the text of the paper that the particular Frenchman said it. It’s generally not a good practice to quote someone in a paper without saying who it is.

When you cite, cite the book as you would normally. You will have already given enough information in the text for the reader to know who said it – the works cited/bibliography will just help the reader know where it came from.

Hope that helps!

How to cite Internet sources in a bibliography

http://www.fsu.edu/~is/bib.htm

Bibliographies come in many formats. Some of the most popular formats are MLA (Modern Languages Association) and APA (American Psychological Association). These two formats are quite different. For example, an FTP file referenced in an APA format looks like this:

…………………………………………………..

THIS IS THE PART YOU WANT TO SCROLL DOWN TO AND OPEN SUBLINKS

There are variations on these formats, since citing electronic sources hasn’t been formally standardized yet. You can find out more about how to cite electronic sources by visiting the following Web sites:
